SEM is basically paid-placement on seach engines. Their are many options for SEM. The major search engines offer their own search engine marketing solutions; which will be explained in further detail later. SEM can often prove effective, but it is hardly a counter-solution to SEO.

2. Site approval by the search engine.

By advertising with Yahoo Search Marketing, your ads can be placed across an entire network of popular sites and search engines including Yahoo! Search (such as Excite, AltaVista, ESPN, CNN, etc.)

By advertising with Google Adwords, just as with Yahoo!, your ads can be placed accross an entire network of popular sites and search engines including Google Search (such as AOL, Shopping.com, ASK.com, etc.) The difference is that your ads may also be placed within the Google content network and Gmail.
